By San Iacopo

Saint James, patron saint of Spain.

The gate was built in 1613 during the viceroyalty of Pedro Téllez-Girón, 3rd Duke of Ossuna, to allow the inhabitants of the Capo to directly reach the western countryside through Via D’Ossuna; it was demolished in 1872. The area outside the gate and the walls is made up of large underground caves that in the early Christian and Byzantine eras were used as catacombs that today can still be visited. AC, 47.
