The prisons of the Inquisition were located in Lo Steri, the seat of the Holy Inquisition from 1601 to 1782, the year when it was abolished; in 1623 a new building was added to the east, called the Carceri della Penitenza (the Prisons for Penance), in order to guard the prisoners of the Inquisition, already partially housed in prisons inside the palazzo; among these were the dreaded “Filippine”, established by Philip II.
