{ Chapter Twenty-Two }

The Norman complex of San Giovanni dei Lebbrosi, built by Roger II and transformed into a leper colony by William I, was joined to a large hospital in 1482; during the plague of 1575 it was used as a hospital for infected and mentally ill patients. In 1825 it was transformed into a tannery, a function that it maintained until first half of the twentieth century. AC, 182.
